March 16, 2011: Patient-Friendly Healthcare Reform Becomes Law, Landmark legislation helps keep physical and occupational therapy services accessible and affordable for all Kentuckians On March 16, 2011, Governor Steve Beshear signed into law Kentucky Senate Bill 112, legislation that will keep high quality, cost-effective, and evidence-proven physical and occupational therapy services accessible and affordable for all Kentuckians. The law will go into effect in January 2012.
With the passage of SB 112, sponsored by Senator Tom Buford, Kentuckians needing physical or occupational services will have a co-pay or co-insurance amount for each visit equal to a visit to their primary care provider. A statewide grassroots effort -- supported by the members of the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association and the Kentucky Occupational Therapy Association, physical and occupational therapy patients, and House Representative Ben Waide, a physical therapist himself -- was instrumental in garnering support in the Kentucky House, which passed the legislation 98-0.
"As Kentucky's leading independent practice provider of physical therapy," KORT President, Jason Chambers, "we provide our patients with proven, cost-effective, and evidence-based treatment. This new law is an important step in keeping physical and occupational therapy accessible and affordable for all Kentucky residents. We, along with our patients and colleagues across the Commonwealth, have worked tirelessly to ensure that physical and occupational therapy benefits remain affordable in an era of skyrocketing premiums and reduced coverage."
"In addition," said Chambers, "this new law increases patients' ability to make informed healthcare decisions by requiring insurance companies to clearly state the availability of occupational and physical therapy coverage under its plan and all related limitations."
